 Idyll with blemishes |

Switzerland, a haven of peace and quiet? Clichés like this are only part of the truth. So violence has to be on the agenda – for Switzerland and for the national exhibition. The garden of violence contrasts with the beauty of nature. In this setting, what would pass unnoticed as a stifled cry is all the more poignant.

This is why The garden of violence should be seen as a place of remembrance. As you stroll through the site, your senses will be assailed by artistic installations, objects, films and sounds. They portray different aspects of the same phenomenon: violence in relationships, violence in the public sphere, the rage provoked by living conditions that are beyond a person’s control – in exile, for example. These tensions are followed up in the Morat History Museum, which is also part of The garden of violence. Its collection includes contemporary works of art recalling many warlike events, notably the Battle of Morat. This forces us to see the matter from a new angle, and the violence of our own times becomes part of a story that must not be forgotten.
