A centrifugal mosaic of contemporary Switzerland |

What does it mean to be Swiss today? Anyone asking this question generally meets with misunderstanding and perplexity. The fact is that the myth of Switzerland has been damaged and the reality in this country is often contradictory. Swiss Panorama version 2.1 takes a closer look at all this.

The National Museum is next door to Needle Park. Neo-Nazis show up at the Swiss national holiday celebrations on August 1st. Violence and poverty rear their head in safe, well-to-do Switzerland. The Swiss have had to get used to many things, with unforeseeable consequences. It is becoming increasingly difficult for them to take a clear position on “their” Switzerland. To do so, they first have to accept everyday life in this country as it really is, with all its images of kitsch, pathos, sacrosanct earnestness and healthy optimism.
After sifting carefully through hoards of photos collected from different sources, the artists behind Swiss Panorama version 2.1 created a visual theatre using an 8-metre (26 ft)-high circular screen with a diameter of 21 metres (63 ft). This is your opportunity to explore a world of contradictions. You may find the images irritating or amusing, you may admire some and want to analyse others. What you cannot do is not have an opinion – unless you close your eyes.
